Grooming for VFX: Lessons from a Kong Project

Grooming is one of those disciplines that looks deceptively simple from the outside. Hair grows out of skin, right? Just add XGen guides. But after weeks on the Kong model at Pixelloid, I can tell you — real grooming work is about understanding how hair behaves in motion.

The Guide Strategy

Kong’s fur had three distinct regions: the dense body coat, the coarser face and brow area, and the shorter palm coverage. Each needed its own guide density and stiffness. I started by painting maps in Substance Painter to define density and length variations, then imported those into XGen as per-patch attributes.

The body coat used 400 guides at 8cm spacing with a clumping modifier set to 0.6 — enough to read as natural clumping without looking matted. The face region needed tighter guides and a custom noise expression on the curl attribute to give it the wild, asymmetrical quality a real gorilla has.

Lighting Interaction

One thing school does not fully prepare you for: how dramatically the lighting model affects grooming decisions. Physically-based hair shading picks up subsurface and specular in ways that can make thin areas look bald. I had to increase tip density by 30% in several regions after seeing the first lighting pass.

Takeaway

Grooming is collaborative. Get lighting involved early. Build your guides with motion in mind even when working on a still. And always paint your density maps before you start placing guides.
