My Journey into FX: Starting from Scratch

I did not grow up watching VFX breakdowns. I finished 12th Commerce at Sri Ayyan Vidyashram, fully expecting to take a conventional path. What changed was a single YouTube video of a Houdini destruction simulation — a building collapsing in slow motion, every brick following physics with mathematical honesty. I watched it twelve times in a row.

The Decision

Enrolling in the VFX Professional diploma at Pixelloid Studios felt like a leap into the unknown. I knew nothing about 3D software, nothing about color science, nothing about rendering. What I had was the same thing most career-changers bring: desperation to be good at something that genuinely excited me.

The First Six Months

Houdini’s node-based workflow broke my brain for the first three months. The shift happened when I stopped thinking of nodes as tools and started thinking of them as sentences in a language — each node a word, the network a paragraph describing what I wanted the computer to do.

Internship Reality

The Kong grooming project was my first real production task. I made mistakes. My first density map was too uniform — the creature looked like it was wearing a costume. My lighting director took twenty minutes to walk me through what was wrong and why. That conversation is the reason I now look at every critique as free education.

What I Believe Now

The best FX artists I have met share one trait: they never stop experimenting. Houdini rewards curiosity. The simulation you build to solve one problem teaches you something unexpected that solves three future problems. Stay curious, take the feedback, and build something every single day.
