From Nuke Compositing to Final Output: A Workflow Guide
The goal of compositing is to be unnoticed. If the audience sees the VFX, the comp has failed. Here is the workflow I developed through Pixelloid’s production pipeline.
Plate Preparation
Before anything else, assess your plate. Lens distortion, noise, rolling shutter — these problems compound as you add layers. I run a LensDistortion node early to undistort, work in undistorted space, and redistribute at output.
Camera Tracking
I use CameraTracker with auto-detected features for most shots, but manually add tracking markers on regions with good contrast and minimal motion blur. After solving, always check residuals — anything above 0.8 pixels should be investigated.
Integrating CG Elements
Shadow passes, reflection passes, and beauty passes each live on separate Merge nodes. The order matters: deep shadow first, then diffuse, then specular, then emissive on top with a Screen blend. This keeps your grade flexibility intact.
Color matching is the hardest step. I sample the plate mid-range values with a Color node and manually lift the CG diffuse pass to match. Curves are your friend here — a subtle S-curve adjustment often bridges a CG element that reads as real.
Final Grade and Output
Denoise with Neat Video on the plate before your final merge — never after. Output as EXR with full-float precision. Never bake your grade into the delivery file; keep a separate graded review render for client feedback.
